Global Data Movement (GDM) is a logical evolution of the Information Supply Chain as the internal data flow within corporations. It is the basis for the collective value chain in the environment of industry and trade and implies the democratisation of data.

The most important areas of GDM are the two markets industry and trade, the movement itself, which describes how and where the data is moved, and the essential area of culture, which defines the specific rules a global data exchange requires. This includes the use of a common language, signs, processes, and quality standards.

A prominent example of such a global data standard is the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), which comprises of a global network of data pools that are used to exchange data between industry and trade in real-time. The Global Registry includes all published articles with a detailed localisation structure that describes, in which data pool the respective article is stored. The GDSN uses rules such as the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and the barcode.
