The term Contextual Intellectual Property describes knowledge that is derived from networked information within a company. For example, the connection between two or more nodes – let‘s say a piece of product information and a piece of customer information – is a context (or, in technical terms: a relation). The meaning of these contexts has increased substantially in the past few years as they provide highly valuable insights and offer many opportunities to turn these insights into business.

Contextual Intellectual Property is built on the actual knowledge the company draws from these relations. Using this knowledge, companies can derive the rules that ultimately shape their IP. It is important to understand that the IP lies within the context between the nodes and not in the nodes themselves as it is realised only by a polyphonic data model.
